An argument between longtime friends turned violent Thursday night in Farmington Hills when one teen shot the other with an assault rifle.
According to Farmington Hills police, Ronald Christian Kamm, 17, of Farmington Hills, is charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, a 10-year felony; and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, a 2-year felony.
He was arraigned Friday afternoon by 47th District Court Magistrate Sawicky and a $25,000, 10 percent bond was issued. He was ordered to have no contact with the victim.
Kamm, who lives on Linden Street, west of Middlebelt between Nine Mile and 10 Mile, argued and physically fought with his friend, an 18-year-old, on the front lawn at about 8:45 p.m. Thursday. The fight ended; Kamm reportedly went into his house and when his friend started to approach the house, he allegedly shot him in the leg with an AK-47 assault rifle.
Farmington Hills Police Chief Chuck Nebus said the teens, who had been friends for a long time, had an argument over a week ago about who was going to drive whom home after they had been drinking. He said there were at least seven witnesses to the fight in the front yard Thursday night, but no one called the police until after shots were fired.
The victim sustained serious injuries to his leg, but they're not life-threatening, Nebus said.
Nebus said the incident was avoidable.
“It's a very sad example of how violence can escalate,” he said. “If anyone who was involved would've called us, we could've stopped the fight on the front lawn and it wouldn't have escalated to this point.
“Any kind of violence is a bad thing — that's why people have to step in, and intervene whenever they can.”
