Robert,Of course it's always easy to say these kinds of things in hindsight, but the press missed numerous opportunities here. They will argue that they had nothing to work with because the families wouldn't talk and the cops wouldn't say much. That doesn't stop a lot of investigative reporters, but apparently it did here. Not only were most stones left unturned, the stuff that showed up on t.v. during sweeps week or near the anniversary date of one of the murders was completely pathetic and crass.

Helen, If they could solve the BTK case, then why can't they solve the Occk cases. Note-Around the same time the task force was rejuvenated, Dennis Radar was arrested in the BTK serial killings (2-25-05). Those crimes began in 1978. The case differs significantly because usable DNA was left at the scene of these crimes and Radar was under surveillance after having mailed some incriminating materials to a t.v. news station. The DNA of his adult daughter was obtained and provided a familial match to crime scene evidence. A story could have been done contrasting these serial murder crimes which were of the same era. If the BTK crimes were solved, can the OCCK crimes be solved?...but the News Media-Just let the Occk story go by the way side-

Helen, We need a "shake something loose" type of story. Sometimes, even after a very long time (or maybe because it's been a very long time), somebody comes forward. Get the meat of the story out there as well as all three of those composite drawings and see what happens. This is how the Unabomber case was solved--in 1995 the New York Times printed the Unabomber's "manifesto" and Ted Kaczynski's brother became suspicious after reading it and comparing it to some things Ted had said and written. David Kaczynski went to police with his suspicions, in spite of the fact that Ted could face the death penalty for his crimes. Xxxxxx

Helen, Everyone always wants to do something to help-Why don't they write story's for the site They could,Talk to retired police officers who worked on the OCCK--those who have nothing to fear as far as repercussions in the law enforcement community. I bet those guys have a wealth of information. Ask them for ideas of what should be put out in the public to try to get somebody to connect the dots and come forward. Try some creativity for god's sake. Ask them how they were hampered in their ability to investigate. Is Johannes Spreen still alive--what does he have to say about the investigation and how LE reacted to his comments of August 1977? .

While your waiting for Grand Juries news-why not- Do some posts up for the site-The impact of these crimes on the communities and on the entire state of Michigan. It's obvious from the postings on various sites all over the internet how personally devastating these crimes were to people who had no connection with any of the victims or the victims' families. Grown men and women posting about how the OCCK crimes still scare the nuts out of them; how it has affected their parenting; how their childhood was stolen from them in the wake of these crimes. And these are the people who didn't even know a victim or a victim's family member. You can do this~

The Jimmy Hoffa barn-razing in May of 2006. Excuse me, but The FBI can spend that kind of money looking for the remains of a man whose links to the mob were well-known, but at that time no one was willing to run DNA tests on the animal hair in the OCCK case?? Tell us what you think!

Video #11- will tell you the story about the following posts-Dear Det.'s Gray and Robertson,
My name is Judi Coltman. I was a sophomore at Seaholm in March of 1977. Cathy King was in my husband's class, Chris King was in my class, and Tim King was my brother in law Tim Coltman's good friend. In fact, he was one of the boys with Tim at Hunter Maple the afternoon of March 16.
My mother in law ( now deceased) Polly Coltman was also at the pharmacy that afternoon and is sure she physically bumped into the OCCK. She also watched as this same person circled the block of Madison St. and around Poppleton Park several times that afternoon. She reported her experience to the police, but was discounted - mostly, she believed, because the man was not driving a blue Gremlin, but a light colored vehicle.
Before Tim King's body was found, my brother in law ( who was 12 at the time) received a few phone calls from a man wanting to know more about Tim King. The caller never identified himself, but the police did put a tap on their line for a few days with no luck.
If you have any interest in what Polly Coltman told me - or what our time frame was on the 16th of March - please let me know. I promised her literally on her deathbed that I would never let it go if there was a way to get someone to listen.
Feel free to email me.
Sincerely, Judi Coltman
Answer* If you could provide more information on when she contacted the task force, so I could locate the information from her original contact(dates, Police Departments, etc), I would have a better understanding of what information you are referring to.
Because, unless she was able to provide a vehicle registration or some other specific information, I am not sure what we could do with the apparently limited information. As our Task Force is substantially smaller than the one from the 1970's and 80's, we must trust that the officers at the time of the original task force conducted complete investigations.
If you have further viable information..please forward it to myself, and I will review it.
And, Thank you for your interest in this case.

Helen, What the hell ever happened with the McKinney murder investigation? Was his murder in any way linked to the OCCK murders? Nobody finds it unusual that he was murdered six months after Tim King was murdered--two unsolved murders in Birmingham, Michigan within six months of each other??? they both remain unsolved??-Note well I sent the cops enough info to make and arrest -even sent them photos-But...That was old Stuff to them-They have Bigger Fish to FRY!!

I know the part about the Undercover cops watching Dantos house and business for 18 months is not true-"Bloomfield Township psychiatrist Bruce Danto, working with police, felt that the killer was speaking out to him, leaving him a message by placing Kristi's body on Bruce Lane. Several weeks later he received a letter from a man named "Allen," who claimed he was the killer's roommate, and had even helped care for the victims. Shortly thereafter, "Allen" phoned Danto, offering to provide photos in exchange for prosecution immunity. They were to meet at a gay bar near Detroit's Palmer Woods, but "Allen" never showed up. Danto made numerous attempts to reach out to "Allen" and to the killer, to no productive avail. In case he was ever approached again, Danto's home and office were observed by undercover FBI officers for the next 18 months."*( They couldn't have been watching it to good-as John drew me a picture of the back of Danto' house where you can see in side-and he drew a map of all of the trees up to his house-and the number of them was exact...

No ,I do not think the Lady who saw the gremiline would have mistaken Busch' car with the stripe over the top and down over the hood -for a stripe she saw that was on it side-** "Law enforcement knew after the second case, and certainly by the third, that they were dealing with a serial killer. The Michigan State Police led a group of over 200 law enforcement officials from 13 communities, forming a task force devoted solely to the investigation. Soon after Timothy King was abducted, a composite drawing of the suspected kidnapper and his vehicle was released. A woman claimed she had seen a boy with a skateboard talking to a man in a parking lot of the drugstore to which Timothy had gone. The vehicle was reportedly a blue American Motors Gremlin with a white side stripe. Ultimately, law officials would question every Gremlin owner in Oakland County, and every blue Gremlin was reviewed.

New accreditation by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors will allow Oakland County to apply for federal grants to fund the $2.5 million to $3 million necessary to set up a county DNA testing lab, Sheriff Mike Bouchard announced Tuesday.
Under the best-case scenarios for grant applications, the county could have a DNA testing lab in about a year, Bouchard said.
The accreditation also adds credibility to the county's existing laboratory functions, such as fingerprinting and drug testing, Bouchard said. "It allows us to move to the next level," he said. "Many of you who watch 'CSI' understand the jurors now expect forensic evidence."
An Oakland County DNA lab would help relieve a logjam of cases at the three Michigan State Police labs doing DNA testing, Bouchard said. High-priority cases such as homicides are usually processed in one or two weeks, but other cases can take as long as nine months.
Bouchard said one Oakland County rape case waited eight months for DNA tests. Two more sexual assaults occurred before the evidence came back and police were able to arrest the suspect, Bouchard said.
"The State Police do a great job; they have fantastic crime labs," Oakland County Sheriff's Office Maj. Robert Smith said. "But we know in the past several years, the workload they're asked to handle has been ever-increasing. And with the closure of the Detroit lab, that has only exasperated or compounded that workload and situation."
But the State Police may have a say in Oakland County's proposed DNA testing lab.
"We were surprised by it," said John Collins, director of forensic science for the State Police.
Oakland County is just 2% or less of the DNA testing, Collins said, adding that the state agency will not have a backlog in "the near future" because it has adopted new practices that are steadily erasing the backlog.
Collins said the State Police will be having discussions with Oakland County about the proposed lab.
"DNA is the only federally regulated forensic science and when you get into it, it's an entirely new level of regulations," Collins said.
The State Police would be the main agency for DNA testing in Michigan, and Oakland County may have to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the agency to have the lab. It's possible the State Police may even need to audit a county lab, Collins said.
The City of Detroit closed its scandal-plagued crime lab near Brush Park in 2008. The Free Press reported in May that items left in the old, unsecured lab included live ammunition and paperwork containing Social Security numbers.
