John's passport has been a sticking point - correct? Here's a thought. If he had a passport in 1977, I think it would have been outdated in 1992. To get a new passport issued, one must turn in the OLD passport first. If John has gone overseas anytime during the 90's or 2000's - it has to be on a new passport which means the old one would have to be on file with the government. 1) If he can still produce that passport now - then it must be a fake. He certainly wouldn't turn the fake one in to the gov't. 2) If he did turn it in to get a new one, then it might be filed away in a box somewhere and could be reviewed to see it's validity.
