Mystery man: Those behind 1970s child killings in Oakland County are alive Oakland County Child Killer case: Family says mystery man's tip may lead to cop
At least five people were involved in the Oakland County child killings of the 1970s and at last four of the culprits are still alive, according to Bob, the mysterious confidential informant who wants the Department of Justice to take up the 36-year-old-plus investigation.
During a telephone interview this morning at a downtown Detroit law office, Bob told the Free Press that the killers murdered 11 to 16 more children than the four officially credited to the Oakland County Child Killer.
But he wouldn’t identify the killers or provide a list of all of their victims because he said he doesn’t want to jeopardize bringing the killers to justice. He said he and a half dozen associates have identified at least five factors that connect each of the killings.
“The odds of finding that many cases that have that many similarities would be like hitting six different lottery grand prizes with the same numbers,” Bob said during the hour-long interview, the first of several media interviews he planned to conduct today. “The odds of that are beyond astronomical.”
The individual interviews were conducted in the office of attorney Paul Hughes, who sued Oakland County authorities and the Michigan State Police two weeks ago on behalf of Deborah Jarvis of Petoskey, the mother of one of the four confirmed victims of the child killer.
The $100-million lawsuit accuses authorities of stonewalling efforts by Jarvis and others to find who killed the children. The suit seeks to have the investigation turned over to the Department of Justice — something Bob said will only happen if Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper or the Michigan State Police requests such a probe.
The state police have declined to discuss the lawsuit. Cooper has dismissed Bob as a crank and accused attorney Hughes of taking advantage of Jarvis’ grief. She said Bob should turn his information over to the FBI.
Authorities have said the killer or killers abducted and murdered four children in 1976-77 in southern Oakland County: Jarvis’ daughter, Kristine Mihelich, 10, of Berkley; Mark Stebbins, 12, of Ferndale; Jill Robinson, 12, of Royal Oak, and Timothy King 11, of Birmingham. No one has been charged in the cases, although authorities identified several possible suspects over the years.
Bob wouldn’t identify himself during this morning’s interview, reveal how old he is, where he lives, what he does for a living or how he and his associates managed to crack a case that has eluded authorities for four decades. He called a cell phone that sat on a table in Hughes’ conference room and individually talked with reporters on condition that they not record the conversation. Hughes sat in on the meeting.
Hughes and Jarvis have said they have never met him face-to-face and don't know who Bob is, but Jarvis said she's had hundreds of phone conversations with him in the last two years.
Bob said he doesn’t have any confidence that Oakland and Wayne County grand juries that are supposedly investigating the case will ever charge anyone in the case.
Bob said he has tried repeatedly to share his information with investigators and even met with representatives of Cooper, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard and the Michigan State Police in October 2010. He said he wanted to obtain an insignificant piece of information — a location — that would help move along his investigation and establish a working relationship.
But he said he was rebuffed by Cooper and lied to by investigators.
