Emma Bell, a woman who said she thinks of Kwame Kilpatrick as a son, delivered powerful testimony today about splitting campaign donations with the then-mayor. Bell claimed she delivered more than $200,000 to Kilpatrick, in $10,000 or lesser amounts, on multiple occasions. This was cash from campaign funds and his non-profit Civic Fund. Bell would raise the money, take 10-15 percent and give some to the mayor, she testified. Some of the money was supposed to be used to help Detroit's kids and promote voter education. Bell told prosecutor Michael Bullotta, who asked why she took it, "That's really hard to answer, sir, but I did it."
