Awhile back posted from the FOIA docs a bit about John Hastings and his passport alibi. I spoke with Don Studt in 2005 or 06 concerning Hastings and what I knew about the night of March 16, 1977. He again reiterated that the passport was John's alibi and it was legit. What follows tells me something very different. Judi
Birmingham Police Dept Narrative Report - 77-3333
March 3, 1992
I spoke with Captain Watson of the Sheriff’s Department. Based on the information and his review of Helen’s reports, he has no further plans to follow up on this tip, and does not plan to talk with redact (John Hastings - JH - mine) at all.
I spoke with the U.S. Customs Investigator Bouchard at the Detroit office. He will check his records to ascertain if he has any records of JH in or out of the country during the late 70’s. However, he believes that he will not have any luck finding anything. He explained that Customs has a check that they run, but only on random individuals and suspect individuals.
I contacted the Investigative Office of the United Staes Department of State in Chicago. Richard Beckman is the investigator I spoke with. I asked him for information regarding the passport of JH. He said his data base is computerized back to 1978. His files between 1962 and 1977 are, what he calls, miscellaneous files and he said frankly he never had any luck finding anything out of those files. He will get back with me if he can locate any information.
A teletype was also sent with a request for a query investigation from Interpol in Washington, D.C. The request was to as they check with French authorities to determine if that country had a system whereby they kept trak of foreign national’s exit and entry into the country.
Redacted paragraph
I spoke with retired Det. Winklemann and he could not recall specifically interviewing JH. However, he does recall going to the RenCen [where JH worked - Mine] to interview a suspect in 1977. He says he does not recall if he would ever have checked a passport. I spoke with retire Det. Marble. He too said that he could not recall specifically speaking to JH. However, he is sure he did not check anyone’s passport for an alibi when he was working on this case.

Report of Interview - Redacted
MOM is the mother of JH.
[Paragraph 3] She said that while she was living at [Tuckahoe]. she lived with ehr husband and family. The house next door was owned by them and was rented over a period of 2 or 3 years. She said thre were 3 sets of people that lived there. She described the first group of renters as nice people. The second group of renters were Spanish and having some problems. The third group were prostitutes [COMMENT - doesn’t this throw up a red flag?] She said it was hard to find renters, but they seemed to fill up and the house was not vacant for very long. The house was sold by her husband sometime around the time she was divorced. She said she believed that happened in about 1977. About 9 months or so before her husband moved out.[COMMENT - Later she says the divorce devastated the family - yet she isn’t sure about the year?]
...She said the family relationship was characterized as terrible. Her husband, every time anyone would make a comment, she would tell him to shut up, and they were just trying to start an argument. She said that JH was very upset when his father moved out of the house. However, he did not take on the traditional male head of household roles.
...He had a very hard time growing up. He had no friends that she knew of during high school or after high school.
...She said he was a natural born artist. He was very talented. She recalls an incident when he was young (she believes it was at Brother Rice)$50.00 worth of oil paints were stolen. She said that this was one of the few times that she ever knew he was upset.
...She said the family used to travel very little. They use to go tent camping when she had 3 children.... Once the other two came, they stopped traveling completely. She is aware that JH did go to Europe for an extended periods of time. She believes it was before the divorce, but she can’t really place her finger on it. She knows the JH sold his car to raise some money and worked his way across on a boat. SHe knows he was in Italy, Germany and France. She seems to recall that he ran out of money. He wanted to got o England but was unable to do so. She doesn’t remember how he got home. When she thought about it further, she thought JH may have been in Europe when they were separated or shortly after the divorce. But again she can’t put a date on it. She has no cards or letters that would help fix that date.
COMMENT - This is not the story John tells. He says he flew and went to Brussels. Judi

Birningham Police Dept.
Narrative Report 77-3333
3-12-92
This is from an interview with John Hastings oldest sister [SIS]. Her name has been redacted.
SIS is the sister of JH and lives in Southfield. She told me that about two or three weeks ago she received a phone call from JH and that she had the impression, based on that telephone call, that JH needed money. Although the call was very unfocused, she said she kept waiting for JH to explain the purpose of the call. Near the end of the telephone conversation, JH told her that there was a social worker on the line, who had been listening to the conversation. This person was later identified as Helen.
SIS said she thinks her parents were divorced in 1977 and that JH was living with his mother in 1976 and 1977. She believes her brother REDACTED was living there and moved out in 1977 or 1978 to go to Arizona. She said the divorce did have a traumatic effect on the family. However, she said the family had many problems prior to that time. She characterized it as a family where everyone pretty much kept to themselves. She said that her father use to beat up her mother and went on to say that her mother was mentally ill , and at some point everybody hit their mother in that house. She said that JH did not have a close relationship with his mother and she thought, to this day, he still hated her. She said the siblings in the family do not keep in touch with each other. Once they left home, they left and did not go back. They very infrequently talked with each other or with their mother.
...She indicated that JH told her on the phone, when they talked, that he had his passport and that might document dates he was in Europe. She said he went to Europe alone, worked his way over on a ship and he was gone a couple of months. He had talent as an artist and went to Europe to draw. He was in Rome, Germany, and France. He came back with a lot of drawing and paintings. He drew primarily European architecture. She doesn’t know when or how he got home.

Florida Georgia Line is my favourite country music band. Headliners Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley are those guys that can make anyone sing along. That's why I like to visit their shows. And - that's surprisingly beatiful - in 2019 they have CAN'T SAY IT AIN'T COUNTRY TOUR which covers all the US towns and cities. For more information visit Florida Georgia Line Tour.
